Ski Touring Skills

On our ski touring skills courses you will have the opportunity to safely learn and practice the essential skills you will need if you are planning on ski touring in an alpine environment. The courses are suitable for those with no prior ski touring experience and who wish to progress to ski touring in glaciated terrain, and is ideal training for a tour later in the season. You’ll also get the opportunity to meet like-minded people and discuss future ski touring adventures. What better classroom than the glaciated terrain of the Alps!

The courses cover route planning and navigation, skinning skills, glacier travel, crevasse rescue, transceiver training, recognising avalanche terrain and avoiding avalanches, emergency procedures and using crampons and an ice-axe.

The course combines both off-piste instruction and ski touring skills. It is aimed at intermediate level off-piste skiers who want to learn the essential ski touring skills for travelling safely and confidently in the backcountry, whilst also having instruction to improve off-piste skills and technique. As part of the course all participants will also complete the Foundation level Avalanche training course.

Ski Touring

The Tarentaise Day Tours week offers a mix of guided day ski touring with lift-accessed off-piste, allowing us to show you the best the Tarentaise has to offer. Depending on snow and weather conditions, the trip is likely to include a climb to the summit of the Fogliettaz, with a full descent of the north face. This is the highest point of the Sainte Foy ski area and is one of the most iconic and rewarding ski descents in the world, offering glorious scenery with views of the Archeboc and Ormelune summits and the hanging glacier of Les Balmes. We’ll also be planning to travel to the Col du Lac Noir on the Italian/French border, with stunning views across to the Grand Paradiso in Italy.

Guest comments

Here are some comments made by guests on previous Off Piste weeks at the Auberge:

“I’d like to thank Mountain Tracks for a great holiday! Our chalet was fantastic – great food, staff and hot tub. In particular, our teacher Bryan was great. He kept the group interested and was very clear in explaining what we should be doing. Most importantly he found us some excellent runs!”

“The Auberge and especially the staff here have been fantastic. Everything has been done very well and everybody has been really helpful. The food has been very special and it’s just been great. Brian Hogg has been an excellent ski instructor and has helped us all to improve our skiing. He is knowledgeable, very patient and good fun as well. He has improved my skiing no end and made it very enjoyable at the same time. His teaching style is so calm and relaxed that it inspires confidence in all of us.”
